Welcome to the Soteria Safe Sleeping Advice Newsletter for Education and Care Services

Soteria will keep you, and the families you care for, up to date with current media and safety issues, and how to improve your safe sleeping practices.

They say time and tide wait for no man, but the COVID-19 outbreak has certainly put the brake on how we go about our daily lives at present.

Spreading the safe sleeping message is a key motivation for Soteria Safe Sleeping Advice and although the Victorian government has eased restrictions, life has not yet returned to the ‘normal’ we knew.  With these preceding weeks being difficult for everyone, our usual avenue for getting our message out to expectant parents, new parents and other caregivers has been severely curtailed.  Read on to discover what we are doing with our safe sleeping education.

Inclined Sleepers and their risks to sleeping infants

Recent reports from overseas and concerns raised by safety experts and consumer advocates, such as Choice here, have noted infant deaths attributed to this type of product.

These products should not be used an infant sleeping device.  Infants should not be placed in a tilted position or on an incline to sleep, nor should they be propped up with a bottle to settle.

You can read our blog on Inclined Sleepers for Infants.

Online Info Sessions

New Online Information Sessions for all carers

We don’t have to tell you that babies sleep a lot in those first twelve months, which is why it is critically important expectant parents, new parents and other caregivers are given every opportunity to hear evidence-based safe sleeping information.

We are excited to announce we have developed a series of live webinars which will deliver access to this valuable information.  Whether availability to safe sleeping is difficult because of distance, financial or other restraints, moving to an online platform offers all caregivers the tools to provide a safe sleeping environment for the baby in their care.

Our first Introduction to Sleeping your baby Safely, a free 30-minute session will be held on Tuesday 9 June and will be followed by a series of other sessions, currently focussed on:

  • Product Safety

  • Myths & Marketing

  • Sleep bags, wraps or swaddles?

The free introductory session covers the principles of safe sleeping and touches on safe practice, safe product and safe place.

Further, more in-depth sessions, which cost $15 a session, explore three topics that the most questions when we speak with families at the Expos.  To get the most from these sessions, we strongly recommend that the introductory session is completed prior to undertaking the specialist sessions.

Our Product Safety session is designed to give you the tools to assess for yourself – is this the right product for me or my baby? It helps to make it simple, safe and save you money… Presenter, Jill Green, will show you what questions to ask when considering using a particular type of product, whether this is new or second-hand – e.g. Do all products sold in Australia have to comply with safety standards? How will I be using this product? and more…

The Myths & Marketing session looks at some of the myths surrounding safe sleeping as well as the accuracy of some claims made about products.  Since the introduction of the Safe Sleeping health promotion three decades ago, a lot has changed – years of research has identified that eliminating certain risk factors can reduce infant sleep accidents and death.  It has also highlighted that claims made by manufacturers are not always accurate so it can be difficult to know what is true, or just clever marketing. We show you what is hype and what is evidence-based fact.

Sleep bags, wraps or swaddles?  This session focusses on helping you unwrap the benefits and risks of the many different choices of swaddles, bedding and sleeping accessories out there in the market.  From swaddles, blankets and sleep bags to bedding and accessories and everything in between, there are so many gorgeous products from which to choose – what is safe, what the risks might be, how do I know what’s right for my baby?

What is safe bedding for your baby, what can you put in baby’s sleep place, what temperature should your nursery be, what is a TOG – and how important is that?  Jill walks you through these and more to give you the information and confidence to set up a safe place for your baby to sleep.

Alerts & Recalls bulletins

Efforts to stop unsafe products being sold in store or online have been chequered and regular recalls and safety alerts demonstrate we have quite some way to go before we can be confident that unsafe products are kept out of the marketplace.

Your support in posting our Alerts & Recalls bulletins gives parents information about unsafe products they may not otherwise find out as often media coverage is sketchy at best, non-existent at worst.

We will continue to distribute our bulletins and from feedback, this is proving to be helpful both to educators and parents.  Our most recent can be found here

Myths & Marketing

Alarmed by the increasing number of recalls or safety alerts, Soteria has done a deep-dive into some of the claims made by manufacturers and retailers about the benefits of the plethora of infant products in the market.

This new resource provides an evidence-based look at claims made by manufacturers spruiking the benefits of their infant products, many of which are advertised as being safe to sleep baby.  We have scrutinised these claims and noted any research that supports or refutes those claims so parents can make an informed decision as to whether that type of product is appropriate for their little one.

Results from this examination, together with the questions raised by concerned parents visiting our PBC Expo Advice Centre, motivated us to provide our Myths & Marketing online information session to help caregivers understand the important role safe products play in reducing sleeping accidents.

Education Sessions

With the recent introduction of the Education and Care Services National Regulation 168 in October 2017, it is imperative that educators are well informed about evidence-based safe sleeping recommendations and each centre has a current policy around sleep and rest for children.

Soteria Safe Sleeping Advice runs on-site education sessions and half and full day workshops specifically aimed at the Education and Care Services.
